PSHE & British Values

Intent

Our intention is that, when children leave St Clement’s, they do so with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active role in today’s society. We want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it. Our school STAR values (Safety, Trust, Achievement and Respect) underpin our PSHEC curriculum, along with a nurturing, caring environment that fosters the wants and needs of our children.

Implementation

We deliver discrete PSHEC lessons each week. Planning is developed in accordance with the PSHE Association guidance and through the use of online SCARF resource. The PSHE curriculum has three core learning themes: health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world. It also incorporates the RSE policy and identifies links to British Values, Cultural Capital and SMSC. Staff have all received training on the new RSE changes from specialist sexual health professionals and visitors such as emergency services and the school nurse complement our PSHE curriculum. There are many other opportunities where children are involved in PSHE outside of the discreet lesson, including visitors in road safety, water safety, online safety and train safety.

Impact

Formative assessments take place throughout the year ensuring children are supported and challenged. Teachers use this information to inform future lessons; as well as referring to local crime reports to target specific, relevant issues. Through the delivery of our tailored curriculum, children can approach a range of real life situations and apply their skills and attributes to help navigate themselves through modern life. From exposure to a range of global issues and problems, children can build up tolerance and a sense of responsibility of being a global citizen. They can understand the different lifestyles that people may live and be respectful and tolerant towards those leading different lives to themselves.
