Art

Intent

At St. Clement’s we strive to provide a high-quality art and design education that engages, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Implementation

At St. Clement’s we offer the children exciting opportunities to create and produce individual and imaginative pieces as well as functional products across a variety of contexts. Children will be able to practice their skills and develop their subject knowledge through a vocabulary rich environment.

The children are encouraged to make decisions for themselves and engage with practical work. They will work across a variety of mediums including, painting, drawing, collage, printing, creating mosaics, sewing, weaving and sculpture, refining skills through effective year on year progression. The work of famous local, national and international artists are explored to enhance the children's learning

This will be done through both individual and collaborative projects, through termly topic work. Children will learn how to be critical of their work and that of others and develop their evaluation skills.

Impact

Ongoing assessments take place throughout the year. Teachers use this information to inform future lessons; ensuring children are supported and challenged appropriately. Children are able to express their creativity through designing and making, building upon skills taught in previous years. They are able to self evaluate the strength and weaknesses of their end products and offer ways of improving their work, making the process more meaningful and personal. Children gain skills in collaboration, investigation, construction, evaluation and designing, each of which are transferable to their future work life.
